Course Description: Introductory drawing course focusing on the methods and knowledge needed to create various types of spatial illusions and translate observed information onto a two-dimensional surface.

Instructional Goals (Learning Objectives)

Develop a range of skills with various drawing media and techniques.
Recognize the value of sketching to record ideas, research, inspiration, practice, and process work.
Establish foundational drawing and design principles that are applicable across disciplines.
Utilize observational drawing techniques, such as linear perspective and diagrammatic drawing, to accurately create spatial illusion and form.
Develop a basic understanding of the human form in art.
Demonstrate the ability to apply critical analysis and problem-solving skills in the development of finished drawings.
Show an understanding of core visual vocabulary through discussion and critique of final and in-progress work.

Required Methods

Drawing from observation utilizing a variety of techniques in graphite and charcoal
Use drawing media to construct meaning
Drawing from clad and unclad figure models
Use gesture and an understanding of basic geometric form to construct believable human figures.
Quick sketch, gesture, and layout drawing
Use linear perspective (1-pt, 2-pt, 3-pt, isometric) and atmospheric perspective to create spatial illusion and form.
Exposure to historical and contemporary trends in drawing across disciplines.
Participate in group-critique and self-critique
Demonstrate the ability to analyze, research, and present work (written and verbal forms)
