 Professor Steven Hughes Receives Excellence In Scholarship Award

Illustration Professor Steven Hughes from the School of Art & Design has received the Northern Michigan University Excellence in Scholarship Award for the scope and the prestigious nature of his professional work in the illustration field.

Steven Hughes Bio

Steven Hughes is your friendly neighborhood illustration professor. Originally from Ohio, he earned his MFA from Kent State University. He’ subsequently down in Marquette with his wife, son, and their cat, “Bug.” When he is not overseeing the illustration program at Northern Michigan University he operates a freelance art studio, Primary Hughes Illustration. His work has been used by The New York Times, American Greetings, Toronto Blue Jays Care Foundation, Light Grey Art Lab, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio Magazine, and been displayed in over 70 gallery exhibitions around the US. Recently, one of his paintings was acquired by director Martin Scorcese. Hughes’ illustrations have won numerous awards, including a Silver Award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, Merit Awards from 3×3 Magazine’s Annual Show, Creative Quarterly 100 Best 2013, Art Renewal Center International Salon Finalist, and a Silver Medal in painting from The National Art Museum of Sport. His work has also been featured in publications from the Society of Illustrators NY, American Illustration, and in AcrylicWorks: The Best of Acrylic Painting 2014, Drawing Inspiration by Michael Fleishman, and Illustration NOW! 5. This past summer, Hughes served as a juror for the Society of Illustrator’s Los Angeles annual illustration exhibition, and visited Iceland as part of Light Grey Art Lab’s artist residency program.
